There has been much recent media coverage regarding the faulty French made PIP breast implants. I would like to reassure all my patients that I have never used this brand of implants. Most of my patients have had the Allergan - McGhan or Silimed brands of implants.

If you are considering removal of these French made PIP brand of implants, please contact my rooms to make an appointment to discuss this further on 02 9893 9388

: about the implants

There are two main types of breast implants. They are either silicone or saline (filled with salt water). Dr Lim uses both types, cohesive silicone gel and saline breast implants. The new generation silicone gel implants are very safe and have TGA approval (The Therapeutic Goods Association). Most breast implants used here in Australia are silicone gel as the silicone filled implants are known to achieve a more natural result. The shell or membrane of these implants are either a smooth or rough surface. The current belief is that rough surfaced implants minimize the scar tissue that forms around them. The scarring may cause hardening or “capsular contracture”.

Implant shapes vary from round to anatomical (also known as tear-drop shape). Round implants are available in low and high profile whilst the tear-drop shaped implants are available in various widths, heights, projections and sizes. Generally round implants are more suited to patients that are happy with the breast shape and are looking only to increase in the size of their breasts. Round implants gives more upper-pole fullness to the woman's breast. On the other hand, tear-drop implants give much more natural shape to the breast. The more projected lower half of the breast lifts the nipple and may suit those patients with slightly droopy breasts, such as post pregnancy, breast feeding or with weight loss.

Different factors affect the selection of the implant shape and size. Dr Lim is very experienced in the use of both implant shapes and he will assist you in the decision making process. He will discuss this in great detail during your consultation. Choosing the size of your desired implants is a very important personal decision. Inn general women prefer to have their breast size in proportion with their body which can be proportionally large, medium or small. Dr Lim will help you to select the most optimal implant depending on your chest size and your breast base measurements.

Implant placement depends on the amount of breast tissue available to hide the implant to ensure it cannot be seen or felt. Generally those with minimal breast tissue benefit from sub-muscular (sitting under the muscle) placement to provide more cover above the actual implant thereby preventing visible rippling of the implant. Sub-muscular placement also can reduce the risk of capsular contracture.
